MINDFUL ALCOHOL USE OVER THE CHRISTMAS PERIOD🥂🎄by BN Psychologist Diandra Peters.

The festive season is often a time of celebrations with loved ones and for some, alcohol is a part of these celebrations. If you do plan on drinking, here are some tips to help you do so mindfully; to prioritise your wellbeing and reduce risk.

🌟Stay hydrated🌟
Drink water between alcoholic beverages to pace yourself.

🌟Follow guidelines🌟
Consider sticking to alcohol consumption guidelines: no more than 10 standard drinks per week and no more than 4 standard drinks on any one day - https://www.health.gov.au/news/australian-alcohol-guidelines-revised.

🌟Serve yourself🌟
Pour your own glass to track how much you’re drinking as it’s easy to lose count if your glass is being topped up by others. Consider waiting until you’ve finished your drink before refilling to avoid overconsumption.

🌟Keep occupied🌟
Engaging in activities or conversations with friends/family while drinking can help you enjoy the event and prevent alcohol from being the main focus.

🌟Avoid mixing🌟
Stick to one type of alcohol during an event to reduce the risk of overconsumption. Combining alcohol with other substances such as medications or recreational drugs can be unpredictable.

🌟Choose lighter options🌟
Consider selecting drinks with lower alcohol content/no alcohol (e.g. low alcohol beer or mocktails).

🌟Plan transport🌟
Arranging transport in advance means one less thing to worry about. Consider prebooking ride-share or designate a sober driver to ensure you get home safely.

We are pleased to welcome Cailean to the Physiotherapy team here at BN!⁠

Cailean is a senior physiotherapist with a passion for helping individuals overcome any injury challenge. He graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Doctorate of Physiotherapy, following an Exercise Sports Science degree at Deakin University. Adept at treating a broad range of musculoskeletal injuries, he has a keen interest in shoulder and lower back issues, as well as rehabilitation for running-related injuries. However, his expertise extends to all types of musculoskeletal conditions, offering comprehensive care tailored to meet diverse needs. When not in the clinic, you can find him running, playing or enjoying music, or nurturing his herb and vegetable garden. ⁠

Cailean will be available from WC 6th of January for consultations as well as clinical group exercise classes every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Bookings can be made via the link in our bio.⁠

Guided by evidence-based practice, Grace combines mindful movement, hands-on therapy, and health advice to address a variety of musculoskeletal concerns. She values meaningful conversations and strong community connections, always working collaboratively to support overall wellness. When she's not at work, you'll likely find Grace on the move—running (often en route to a coffee shop), swimming, or practicing yoga.⁠
